Adventures in Avenaria
Magic in Avenaria
Arcane magic is rare, after the events of the Aetheric Malaise. Many arcane casters were afflicted with the disease, and their magic burned them to ash from the inside out in an explosion of arcane fire. The Malaise ran its course over the years of 785 to 790, and when it passed, 8 out of every 10 mages was either dead, or could no longer use arcane magic.
To this day, the numbers of arcane casters has not recovered, and magic itself seems suspect. Magic in large quantities can lead to an arcane burst, or a wild magic surge. Because of this, mages are seen as dangerous, and in some cases even actively shunned.
Divine magic on the other hand is extremely common, due to the presence of the gods. Many gods take an active interest in Avenaria, and the fact that they are close at hand has infused the lands with divine magic. To this end, each character in Avenaria can choose one Orison as a once per day ability. The Orison must be chosen at the time of character creation, and doesn’t change. This also requires the character to choose their god at character creation. A character that is an atheist or agnostic does not benefit from this bonus.
